Cookie Policy

This policy explains the cookies and similar technologies used on this campaign website, run by Surfers Against Sewage ([registered charity no. 1145877]).

For how we handle personal data more broadly, see our Privacy Policy and contact privacy@sas.org.uk.

What are cookies?

Cookies are small files stored on your device; we also use similar browser storage (localStorage / sessionStorage). Some are essential for the site to work; others we only use if you agree.

Managing your choices

When you first visit, a banner lets you accept or reject each optional category. You can change your choice at any time by [clicking the cookie icon / re-opening the banner] — non-essential cookies aren't set until you consent, and you can withdraw consent at any time.

Rejecting optional cookies won't stop the core journey (checking your area, emailing your MP, signing up) from working.

The categories we use

1. Strictly necessary — always on

Required for the site and its core actions to function; these can't be switched off.

  • CookieControl

    • set by Civic Cookie Control (us). Remembers your cookie choices. Lasts around 90 days.

  • sas:postcode

    • (session storage) — set by this site. Holds the postcode you enter so we can pre-fill your MP email; this is location data about you. Cleared when you close the tab.

  • ctb-visited

    • (session storage) — set by this site. Remembers you've already visited during this session, so intro animations don't replay. Cleared when you close the tab.

  • New/Mode session cookies

    • set by New/Mode (third party). Run the "email your MP" tool that delivers your message to Parliament. Duration: [session / confirm].

  • reCAPTCHA

    • set by Google, via New/Mode (third party). Protects the MP-email form from bots and abuse. Duration: [confirm].

2. Functional — optional

These enable richer features. They stay off until you accept.

  • YouTube / Vimeo embed cookies

    • set by Google / Vimeo (third party). Play embedded campaign videos. We use privacy-enhanced embeds, and they don't load until you accept functional cookies. Duration: [confirm].

3. Analytics — optional

These help us understand how the site is used so we can improve it. They stay off until you accept, and while declined no analytics cookies are set. We use Google Consent Mode, so measurement stays disabled until you opt in.

  • _ga

    • set by Google Analytics 4. Distinguishes unique visitors. Lasts 2 years.

  • _ga_[ID]

    • set by Google Analytics 4. Maintains session state. Lasts 2 years.

We don't use analytics for advertising, and we don't sell your data.

4. Marketing — optional

We don't currently run any advertising or marketing cookies on this site. The category exists so that if we add one in future (for example a social or ads pixel), it will be off by default and only set with your consent.

Third-party policies

These providers process data under their own policies: [Google/Analytics], [Google/reCAPTCHA], [New/Mode], [Civic Cookie Control], [Vimeo].

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the site changes; the "last updated" date above reflects the latest version.
